Blessed holidays

The holidays in Garderen are a blessing. The simple cabin in the woods brings us exactly the peace and quiet to replenish our energy. Just sleeping, walking, reading and doing all simple trivial stuff that make our life feel normal again... This picture shows it well. It was taken at our first social event since months, the birthday party of our good friend Maria. 

Only now I am shaven again. It only took twoo words from Gerda: Lola borstel... Like always she was right. :-)

The times they are change...

Mijn leven volgt een scenario dat steeds meer afwijkt van wat ik wil of begreep of kon beheersen. Enerzijds poog ik me daar ontspannen aan over te geven, anderzijds wil ik zo graag weten hoe het dan wel zit. 

Dan begin ik weer te zoeken, te voelen en na te denken. Ik heb de neiging de kennis en ervaring buiten mij hoger in te schatten dat mijn eigenwijsheid. De meeste mensen die me goed kennen zullen deze opmerking meteen bestrijden. Ik sta bekend om mijn sterke meningen en oordelen. Wat blijkbaar minder opvalt, is dat ik ze graag en makkelijk inruil voor nog sterkere opvattingen. Want ik hang graag de beste zuiverste redelijkste waarheden aan. Voor mij is dat - voor zover ik nu dus weet - de beste manier om mijn paniek en onvermogen te hanteren. Want al vanaf mijn eerste bewustzijn heb ik grote moeite om te snappen hoe het allemaal zit en hoe ik dus adequaat reageer.

Op dit moment heb ik eigelijk geen goed idee hoe mijn leven verder zal verlopen. Op bijna alle vlakken, van de meest intime persoonlijke domeinen tot de globale politieke, economische en ecologische dreigt onheil. De roofeconomie van de machthebbers bedreigt de coherentie van complete samenlevingen en boven mijn eigen persoonlijke toekomst hangt Gerda's gezondheid als een zwaard van Damocles. En overal zie ik de touwtjes rafelen die alles bij elkaar houden...

Alleen door het leven als één grote les te zien, is er iets uit deze crises te halen. De beste manier van leren is fouten maken en daaraan is geen gebrek. Maar in de complexiteit de werkelijke oorzaken achterhalen is niet simpel. Het meest praktische is dan een goede theorie. Ik ken al een paar hele goeie, waardoor ik er hier en daar wil iets meer van snap inmiddels. Maar mijn generatie van zelfverklaarde wereldverbeteraars maakt zich op voor haar pensioen, terwijl de toestand in de wereld er niet echt op vooruit is gegaan. De les hier blijkt dat we zelf de grootste beperking en bedreiging zijn. 

Daar gaat mijn aandacht nu heen. De vrije wil blijkt weinig meer dan een noodzakelijke en onvermijdelijke ego illusie. En de macht en invloed van onze directe omgeving op wie we zijn en wat we doen blijkt juist heel sterk. En in zijn werking onder de radar van ons bewustzijn te blijven. In de vakantie ga ik dus het werk van Naomi Ellemers lezen. Die heeft daar een gefundeerde sterke mening over ontwikkeld. Daar hou ik wel van... Vandaag heb ik via haar webstekjes al gekeken naar zo'n typisch 'TV-itempje' over groepsidentiteit. En bovenstaand plaatje is daar mijn weerslag van. Wel leerzaam maar helaas een onaf verhaal met denkfoutjes vind ik. Als het leven het toestaat kom ik daar nog eens wat uitgebreider op terug...

There mostly is a trade-off. Eternal peace is for the dead. For us, still alive, this means meandering between the extremes of basically any property of this reality...

Dit gegeven onsnapt aan elke redelijkheid

De baas kan redelijk zijn of onredelijk. Voor jouw gehoorzaamheid maakt dat niet uit. Want dominantie of onderwerping is een meer instinctief geregeld iets. Elk groepsdier laat zich koeieneren door de willekeur van het alfa individu. En elk individu aan de top wordt in deze positie geleidelijk corrupter. Dii is een inherente beperking, die we nu te boven moeten komen willen we een volgend niveau van beschaving kunnen bereiken.

It just won't fit

Freedom is easiest accomplished alone. On your own you can do whatever you want. But at the price of loneliness. People are not made to live alone. This is dilemma number one.
Then, if one would want a partner, there is the second dilemma. A soulmate or a sexmate? Biology forces the latter upon any healthy adult, but that will rarely fulfill the other urge at the same time. Although your hormones will make you believe so until it's mostly too late for change.
Dilemma number three waits in the group dynamics. Family life and tribal traditions ("culture") always will form your prefrence, habits and reactions for life. You can adapt yourself, fight to change it or leave.
ONE thing is sure: "It just won't fit". This imposibility to find rest is what we know as life...

Niks is nieuw, behalve mijn inzicht..?

In april begin ik aan mijn 60e levensjaar. Een bizar gevoel dat me tot in elke vezel verwondert, al was ik er zelf de hele tijd bij.
Achterom kijkend - waar ik op deze grijze en stille decemberdag even tijd voor neem - dan valt me vooral op hoeveel er is veranderd en hoeveel hetzelfde is gebleven. Een normale waarneming op mijn leeftijd weet ik ook meteen. Dit heb ik al eerder gelezen. Maar nu is de waarneming uit de eerste hand en dat is een heel andere beleving kan ik je nu vertellen. ;-)
Vandaag ben ik bezig met alles waar ik dit jaar niet heb afgekregen. Regelmatig bloggen bijvoorbeeld. Te laag gezakt op mijn prioriteitenlijstje lijkt het dan. Maar als ik er over nadenk, dan heb ik het bloggen vooral verwaarloosd bij gebrek aan focus. Ik wist niet meer voor wie ik schreef en waarom en waartoe. Terwijl ik dat duidelijk boven aan mijn blog heb genoteerd. Het is een egodocument en een geheugensteuntje en jij mag naar wens meelezen. Maar omdat ik die notities publiceer via internet, heeft het een aantal effecten. Die heb ik niet geregeld. Eerst bewust maar later dacht ik dat ik daar misschien toch iets mee moest. Die twijfel heeft de terughoudendheid gecreëerd die op zijn beurt de stilte veroorzaakte. En daarnaast deed mijn groeiende achterdocht de openheid ook geen goed. Dat is een gevolg van mijn leven hier in Antwerpen. Ik weet niet of ik dit nu vooruitgang vind, maar soit. Volgend jaar beter besluit ik nu.
Wist jij dat het begrip 'motivatie' pas bestaat sinds de klokken drijfveren hebben? De mechanische klok liet zien hoe het apparaat in beweging kwam zodra de interne drijfveer voldoende spanning had. Die analogie veranderde de kijk op ons eigen apparaat. Tegenwoordig vragen we ons af of we wel voldoende energie hebben en praten we vaker over 'onze batterijen opladen'. En als je nu vindt dat je hersens even tijd nodig hebben om dat te 'processen' te verwerken is dat dankzij de computer...

Trend: The virtual world will be organised by topic

This above statement is with me for years, (I drew this conclusion in PAINT, so you calculate the date) but now I think it starts to emerge in a noticable way in the evolution of the internet. Knowledge and information are muliplying. The need to locate this in an way that can be managed with a minimum of energy is growing. 

Two evolutions collide here. And maybe this is the new synergy. 

FIRST. As allways some people know more about some topic then others. This leds to the point that it is easier to ask them then to know it all. The experts are born. 

SECOND. Groups of people sharing certain interests is not new either. Action groups, pressure groups, lobby clubs, consumer platfoms, political parties, etc., etc. In the same time the internet connects us all better then ever before. 

SO: The combination of accessible experts AND organised groups focused on certain topics might lead to a new dynamic. Mutual stimulation of both developments could change the whole social landscape. Any interest with enough supprt can has access to all the knowledge and information it needs. This new acces to the best insights will boost our evolution, starting in the virtual realm of the internet...

Any engineer or programmer knows the hazards of a tightly-coupled large system. Economists should have seen the same problem when the Soviet empire collapsed, but they didn't because economists are frauds. The solution is simple in concept. Decouple as much as possible. Break up the EU, eliminate multinational trade organizations. Return to the pre-1970 condition of sovereign nations making bilateral trade arrangements. Eliminate every incentive that favors cross-border flows of goods, capital and jobs; those should only happen when they give a real advantage to the PEOPLE of BOTH nations in the transaction.

Since I read Stuart Sutherlands 1992 (!)book "Irrationality" I felt incomfortable about how we ineffectively we use our intelligence.

Well... It got worse since. There seems no hope for improvement. Biology forbids. Just maybe we can build machines smarter then us to make the right decisions for us. Because we fail. Terribly.

Here's a simple arithmetic question: "A bat and ball cost $1.10. The bat costs $1 more than the ball. How much does the ball cost?" The vast majority of people respond quickly and confidently, insisting the ball costs 10 cents. This answer is both incredibly obvious and utterly wrong. (The correct answer is five cents for the ball and $1.05 for the bat.) What's even more upsetting is that these habits are virtually impossible to fix. As Mr. Kahneman himself admits, "My intuitive thinking is just as prone to overconfidence, extreme predictions and the planning fallacy as it was before I made a study of these issues."
