Biomimicry and social media

Biomimicry and social media are two trending developments and I can't wait to see the two collide. In the field of biomimicry we see fascinating "inventions" mostly in materials by imitating the natural solutions, already millions years old. For example, you might know the gekko supertape. Biomimicry is quickly evolving to a profitable industry. The modern availibility of information technology speeds this up. "Stealing" idea's is allways a good idea if you want to progress fast. Mother Nature does'nt mind that at all. We finally come to recognise her superiority and as her children might as well humbly benefit of her abundance. All we have to do is admit that our superiority finally was just a fatal combination of ignorance, naivity and arrogance.
Social Media are a another hype today. Just like the first episode of the internet this creates great expectations. Probabily just as well, it will change the world a lot less spectacularly and yet more profound. It's becoming so easy to know what everybody is up to. "Ich habe es nicht gewußt" is sooo last century. The development of the social media is bound to the same laws of Mother Nature as all inventions are, be it material(s) or immaterial. So I am very curious to see how the evolution of social media will benefit from biomimicry. I hope it will affect opinions about regulating our social behaviour in a positive way. We need to adopt new ways fast, because we are threatening our own very existense with our "modern" ways. Time to progress and learn again from Mother Nature.

Waarom sommige problemen nooit worden opgelost

Na vijf dagen hard werken bij het imd kon ik gisteren in de trein de weekendkranten bijlezen. Het echte nieuws komt dan niet zozeer uit de artikelen zelf, als wel uit de combinatie van verschillende stukken samen. Zo las ik een stuk over de opkomst van de eens zo verpauperde wijk Harlem in New York, gevolgd door een verhaal over hoe het is om arm te zijn in een Brusselse randgemeente. Het patroon van verval en heropleving lijkt universeel. Daarna een verhaal over hoe IJslanders hun eigen economie pogen terug te veroveren na de mondiale exploitatie van hun crisis. Nog een beetje Lehman Brothers Drama toe en dan begint zich nog een ander patroon te vertonen.

Al deze berichten gaan het in één of andere vorm over de verhouding tussen eigendom en verantwoording. In al deze verhalen is die verhouding zoek, terwijl het in wezen twee zijden van de zelfde munt zijn. (Of moet ik zeggen van onze samenleving.) Het pijnlijke is dat deze verhalen niet nieuw zijn. Integendeel. Zo wordt de strijd van de IJslanders om weer de macht te grijpen met allerlei volkse initiatieven volkomen terecht vergeleken met de Franse Revolutie. Blijkbaar zijn deze patronen van verkankering en heropbouw archetypischer dan we ons vaak realiseren.

Over dat laatste moest ik vandaag toch weer nadenken. Als deze crisissen niet nieuw zijn, waarom weten we dat dan blijkbaar niet goed genoeg om er (liefst preventief en pro-actief) iets aan te doen? Zo'n vraag moet ik altijd eerst voor mezelf beantwoorden, voor ik hem zo de openbaarheid in gooi. Ik realiseerde me dat sommige problemen nooit worden opgelost, ondanks dat iedereen de problemen heeft gezien. Het bystanders effect is één van de bekende redenen. En wetenschappelijk gestaafd: Als iedereen het al ziet en niks doet is het zeker niet nodig dat ik zelf spontaan iets doe? En daarbij; de overheid of anders het bedrijfsleven of in ieder geval de wetenschap zal zich er al lang mee bezig houden. Ik lees er toch regelmatig over..?

Maar ik heb zelf ook een ander patroon meegemaakt, waardoor misstanden niet worden opgelost. In mijn geval ging dat zó: Toen mijn dochtertje oud genoeg was om naar de lagere school te gaan, kwamen wij voor het eerst positief en blij gestemd weer in aanraking met dat instituut dat we sinds onze eigen kindertijd achter ons hadden gelaten. Alles is sindsdien leuker, frisser en speelser geworden. De lokalen, de lessen en de juffen.
Maar na de roze beginperiode kwamen we steeds meer met beide benen op de grond... Gedurende de jaren dat Rosa op school zat, werd steeds duidelijker dat er van alles schortte aan het instituut. Kort gezegd was de professionaliteit per saldo flink onder de maat. Maar daar kwamen we zeer geleidelijk achter. En tegen de tijd dat we zeker wisten dat er hoognodig iets moest gebeuren, ging Rosa alweer van school af. Daarmee verminderde ook onze ergernis en de noodzaak om daadkrachtig de knuppel in het hoenderhok te gooien. Nu nog ingrijpen zou lijken op natrappen en bemoeizucht. Dus is de school waarschijnlijk nog jaren op de oude voet doorgegaan, met alle gevolgen van dien voor generaties slecht opgeleide kinderen....

Naar aanleiding van deze oneervolle herinnering moest ik ook bij mezelf erkennen dat mijn inzicht in de economie pas sinds een paar jaar zodanig is dat ik er de betekenisvolle patronen in meen te kunnen herkennen, die ik hierboven beschrijf. Zal ik nu ook wachten tot mijn pensioen voordat ik er iets mee doe? En dan vervolgens maar berusten in de schijnbare onvermijdelijkheid der dingen?

Siësta is goed

Recent onderzoek dat gepresenteerd is op het jaarlijks congres van de American Association for the Advancement of Science, vooral bekend van het toonaangevende wetenschappelijke tijdschrift Science, geeft een andere belangrijke aanwijzing: Middagdutjes!
Mensen die regelmatig een middagdutje doen hebben niet alleen veel minder kans op hart- en vaatziekten maar blijken ook veel beter te presteren op hun werk.
Experimenten hebben aangetoond dat vooral het geheugen veel beter gaat functioneren als er regelmatig een kleine siësta wordt ingelast. Zo gek zijn de gewoonten die leven in zuidelijke landen dus eigenlijk niet. Nu nog je baas overtuigen om je een siësta te laten houden.

Zie we er eindelijk brood in?

Toen ik als jongetje boekjes las over auto's leerde ik al dat elektrische auto's altijd al hebben bestaan, maar nooit de concurrentieslag hebben kunnen winnen. Nu begint het er op te lijken dat steeds meer bedrijven op de elektrische wagen willen springen vóórdat deze echt is vertrokken. Investeerders ruiken winstkansen. Voor de gebruiker is - na de dure aanschaf - elektrisch rijden al tien keer goedkoper. We moeten dan wel weer opnieuw wennen aan een lang verloren weelde: stilte. Want je hoort ze niet aankomen.

Het proces van conceptformatie, ofwel, taggen, labelen, categoriseren en ordenen

Om op zijn minst de schijn van orde en beheersing te handhaven in deze steeds sneller complexer wordende wereld heb ik het nodig om een soort overzicht te houden. Mijn actuele voorlopige werkhypothese over hoe "het allemaal" nu is. Daarmee sorteer ik de impulsen die op me af komen. Maar ook dat verandert. Zelforganisatie is de nieuwe reddingsboei die ons drijvend houdt in de overstelpende ontwikkelingen. Ons brein heeft daarnaast zo zijn eigen methoden. Ons brein heeft een sterke voorkeur voor de meest eenvoudige representatie van een gegeven voorwerp, gedachte of situatie. Dat heb ik uit "Het innerlijk universum" (The universe within) van Morton Hunt uit 1982 al. Dit plaatje op pagina 182 laat het eh concept zien van een proef "The boundaries of words and their meanings" van de linguïst William Labov uit 1973*. Het koppigste kopje is number five...

2010 het jaar van de waarheid?

2010 is mijn 57e nieuwjaar al. En ik merk dat ik er met veel minder illusies aan begin dan aan eerdere jaren. Let wel: Zonder illusies is niet helemaal hetzelfde als gedesillusioneerd. Ik heb nog steeds behoefte aan een voornemen, een richting , een ambitie. Maar mijn batterijen zijn niet helemaal vol meer en ze laden ook trager op. Ik heb minder energie te verspillen aan allerlei leuke onzin. Mijn verlangen naar een wat beter geregeld leven is onverminderd. Voor mijzelf, maar nog meer voor de mensheid als geheel. En dan graag in een harmonieuze globale ecologie. Ik koester nog steeds een paradijselijk verlangen, maar wel vanuit een maatschappij die haar eigen voortbestaan bedreigt. Te veel mensen kiezen voor de waan van de dag omdat de lange termijn steeds minder aantrekkelijk begint te ogen. Het is daarom dat ik van harte hoop en wens dat 2010 voor iedereen het jaar van de waarheid wordt. Stel je eens voor...

Sinterklaas was toch weer leuk

Binnen de Vlaamse cultuur is Sinterklaas minder prominent aanwezig en dan alleen nog voor kinderen. Terwijl ik het juist zo leuk vindt als volwassenen elkaar quasi anoniem liefdevol, poëtisch en creatief een beetje moralistisch op de korrel kunnen nemen middels deze overjarige tussenpersoon. En iemand iets geven geeft mij veel plezier. Maar ik ben hier in Antwerpen met bewust lage verwachtingen deze keer aan het feestje begonnen en het moet gezegd: ik heb me netjes aan de afspraken (beperkingen) gehouden. Daardoor viel het me weer erg mee. Het was een erg gezellig treffen. We kijken er nu weer helemaal anders tegenaan. (zie foto).

Mijn gevoel

Als je begrijpt wat ik bedoel.

Beter gelijk dan rijk!

Hoe meer gelijkheid in de samenleving, hoe meer onderling vertrouwen. Mensen die anderen vertrouwen, zijn optimistischer en hebben meer controle over hun leven. Ze voelen zich comfortabel en hebben minder chronische stress. Voor meer info zie de website van de equalitytrust. Wat dat betreft ben ik er wel op achteruit gegaan. België is letterlijk en figuurlijk een meer versnipperd land. Met minder vanzelf vertrouwen tussen mensen, instituties en zo verder. En dat blijkt niet alleen mijn persoonlijke perceptie te zijn. Ik kom uit een cultuur van "Doe wat je zegt" en "Zeg wat je doet". Dit gedrag heb ik met volle overtuiging geoefend en er de voordelen van gesmaakt. Maar hier werkt dat niet zo. Het vriendelijke gedrag hier heeft meer functies, zoals het voorkomen van expliciete confrontaties. En dus heb ik hier naast "Ja" ook "Ja, ja" leren kennen en zelfs "Ja, ja, ja". In allerlei subtiele toonaarden. Voor mij is het leven een stuk minder eenduidig geworden. Maar goed. Zoals een buurman laatst zei: "Als het over een jaar nog een probleem is, zal het wel echt een probleem zijn zeker?" Het goede nieuws is dat het streven naar meer gelijkheid nu geen vage linkse ideologie meer is, maar een keiharde wetenschappelijke conclusie uit een overvloed aan data van de Verenigde Naties:

Would drag and drop work here too?

I just started to explore Google Wave. They promised drag and drop picture from my desktop into a wave ( = a mail/chat kind of mutant thing). But after a lot of errors I found I had to install 'GEARS' another Google app. Then it worked. Now would it work HERE too? I write this post in Google Mail. That would be nice. It is one of the possibilities I miss most since I quit using Apples Mail. So here's the test:

Ik kwam vandaag langs een oud deel van mijn site. Ik moet al beeldmateriaal maar eens doorvlooien. Het blijkt dat het allemaal nog net zo hard waar is als een tijdje geleden.
Deze kan zo gebruikt worden voor COP15.

Hello everyone,
Please read this mail and send back a reply asap if you are interested and have some time during the next 4 days – or if you are not interested or interested but not able.

Last Thursday 4pm we finally got lucky.
We have been invited to join WWF international in their work in relation to the ongoing negotiations leading up to COP15 in Copenhagen December 8th to 18th.
COP 15 is going to substitute the Kyoto protocol which expires in 2012. The Barcelona is the final “working conference”. You can read more on www.cop15.com and www.panda.org/climate.
As we speak, Stine and I, are on the team of “WWF observers” as “visualisers” basically running around the conference center in Barcelona.
· We have been here since Friday supporting WWF in their preparation for the 5 days (mon-fri).
· We participate in WWF morning and evening meetings where 50+ WWF’ers discuss how to influence the negotiations.
· We will each day walk around in this huge space and visualize the process of the negotiations, facilitate dialogues on the floor…etc
· We are supporting WWF putting together powerful visuals which can explain what the talks are about (see from their view)– so that “even your grandmother will get it”.
· We are meeting and talking with many of the players here, spreading the word about how visual facilitation, graphic recording and other visual support can inspire the negotiations.
· We are having conversations with the organizers of COP15 of Copenhagen about how we of how we may involve a larger crew in Copenhagen.

A possibility to contribute
As many of you know, I have over the last 2 years on various occasions voiced the question: “If we (the visual community) is what the world has been waiting for, what might be our unique contribution?”.
I have invited everyone to join the effort, but have been silent…until now. Reason – we have tried and tried to find a platform. This now is happening. And I am hoping you’d be interested in jumping in.

The first task
Today WWF will communicate what they see as 10 steps towards Copenhagen. It is a A3 document with 10 statements (see the attached PDF

Next task
We are forming a wish list – which we will communicate – and invite you to try visualize.
More tasks may come – and you are welcome to brainstorm.

The setup in Barcelona:
Important: This is a pilot! This means we are testing and trying out as much as possible to inform what we can do more of at COP15. We do not have the answers to many questions
WWF has invested in bringing Stine and I here. They are paying for stay, flight and a reduced fee.
Rather than just being the two of us, we have suggested that we start engaging those of you out there who’d like to join and explore.
This is why you are getting this letter.

Your contribution
To those of you who have time, motivation and interest in joining this pilot, we today will start sending mails and blogrequest about what needs to be visualized (we have asked all WWF participants to describe what they need to have a visual for).
You send us examples (fast sketches in JPG, TIFF, PDF) of visuals which explain the text (a word, situation, concept).
The illustrations are either directly put on WWF website and our blog.

Important:
- Make sure that your name is visible on the drawings you send (that is the most visible reference you will get – but do not make it be too big a part of the picture J See the examples we have on our blog).
- We and WWF will do our best to get it a reference list up on the WWF website. The wish is for your name and website is listed and it says that you have contributed to Barcelona.
- The visuals you send you will not keep the copyright for. It will be open source and available for anyone to use.
- If parts and bits of the visuals which come in can be used to create a new visual, we, WWF, you and others can do this.
- Together with WWF communication we go through material and decide what can be used (this means that WWF has a say if there are visuals which are either controversial, or not reflecting the main meaning the intended in the message).

We (Bigger Picture) will publish as much as possible on the Bigger Picture Blog
You are welcome to publish any of this to your own blogs and websites – and spread the word.
You are welcome to post on your own media the following:

“I / We are supporting WWF with creating powerful visual language which can inspire and vitalize the climate change negotiations in Barcelona and potentially COP15”.


Risks:
It could turn out to be nothing but your time will have been used to inspire some or maybe many with one or more visuals.

Opportunity
It turns out that the network of NGO pull together funds and a budget allowing a group of (5-10-15) visual practitioners to come to COP15 for 15 days. You may be involved virtually to contribute and/ or to come to Copenhagen and contribute to the various ways in which we find out can create value inside and outside the negotiations.

Please answer if you might be able to come to Copenhagen from Dec 6th to 18th?

Graphic notes on de Bono

Yesterday I facilitated the key note speakers on the 11th European Conference on Creativity and Innovation. I visually noted their presentations. Some work is here, more will follow. And I am on the same page as Edward de Bono and Kobus Neethling! Mentioned that is... :-) And working hard.
Tomorrow I will join them again.

Weer plaatjes maken

Woensdag en mogelijk donderdag zit ik in Brussel. Daar is de the 11th European Conference on Creativity and Innovation. Ik ga wat visuele notulen maken en wat commentaar tekenen. Hopelijk kan ik moeder aarde weer trots maken op mij.

Lekker tekenen

Ik heb met veel plezier een strip gemaakt 'richting V&W' zoals ze dat daar in bestuursjargon noemen.
Zonder plezier kan ik trouwens niet tekenen, heb ik gemerkt. Nu dus met veel genoegen verder met de volgende plaatjes.

Is this a problem?

This picture was a teaser for a 'prospect' in the Human Resources business.
They did not respond after my fee proposal. Meanwhile I read less enjoyable information on the internet about their exploitative behaviour. Uncheckable of course. But their silence relieved me from deciding about working with people like that...

I vote for that!
